PUBG ban in India: is government going to ban India’s most famous game?

It has been reportedly said that government is taking a view at more than 200 Chinese apps for a potential ban, after ban on over 100 mobile apps has been already done, rumours are that PUBG mobile could finally be banned in India. The mixed response on this news has taken a discussion on the internet and social media channels. However, many fans of the game have been requesting the authorities to not include PUBG Mobile in any fresh or further list of banned apps.


Although the government has not disclosed or clarified the list of apps which was banned under the newly decision, it is said to look banning PUBG mobile game among other China-backed apps and games. 

PUBG Mobile game is one of the highly renowned games in the world and rose drastically when it comes to gaming world in India. Developed by China's Tencent Games-owned LightSpeed and Quantum Studio, the battle royale game has achieved 17.5 crore downloads from India which is 24% of the total installs worldwide, as per a report by Sensor Tower. It has even gained more installs that what it received from China, which has 16.7 per cent share in its entire installs.

There are many Indian gamers who actively stream online PUBG game through their channels on Twitch and YouTube. This game has a large base in India making around $2-3 million (almost Rs. 15-22 crores) on a monthly basis. In India, the game has generated $38.6 million (roughly Rs. 289 crores) in lifetime revenue as well as it was India's top-grossing mobile game in the first half of 2020, according to a report.

Is PUBG a Chinese game?
People have started commenting that this is, in fact, a Korean game-not a Chinese one. This might be true because PUBG is developed and published by PUBG Corporation, which is a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole. However, it was created in a collaboration between PUBG Corporation and Shenzhen-headquartered Tencent Games, so in this way it can be said having some relation with China.
